1妹妹younger sister想want to / would like to吃eat冰淇淋ice cream。
想 is a wish still held back, not yet committed (我想去 — I'd like to go). 要 is a settled plan leaning into the action (我要去 — I'm going to go). 想 stays in the heart; 要 has already tilted toward the doing.
Auxiliary 想 sits before a verb and means want to (我想喝茶 — I'd like a drink of tea). Full-verb 想 takes an object and means think about or miss (我想你 — I miss you). A verb following names the wish; a noun following names the thought.
negating with 沒: 我沒想去 → 我不想去
a thing placed after 想 when a wish to act is meant: 我想冰淇淋 → 我想吃冰淇淋
想 read as a settled plan: for a plan already in motion use 要 — 我想走了(leaving now)→ 我要走了
English 'want to' marks both an idle wish and a firm intention with one phrase, so learners reach for 想 where 要 names a committed plan, or expect 想 alone to carry the whole future.
