字源 FORM — what the parts do

走義to run — a swinging body over a foot, rapid motion
干聲gān — gives the sounda forked pole — a shield, to thrust against
Tgān → gǎn — the tone alone shifts
走 the running body, 干 the sound: to run someone down, to drive them on — to chase. 干 gān carries the sound, only the tone shifted to gǎn. From driving forward came 趕快 to hurry, 趕上 to catch up, 趕走 to drive off.
