V自 grammar point · tier 1 · issuing-from suffix V自 (originate/come from a source)
· zì
Bound suffix on a verb of issuing (出/來/源/引/選/譯/摘 …); 自 attaches behind the verb and names the source the thing came out of.

字源 FORM what the parts do

自 draws a nose seen front-on; "self" borrowed the graph, and "from" grew off it — what starts at oneself starts from a point. Here 自 hangs on the back of the verb: the verb spends or produces, 自 turns to the well it was drawn from.

故事 STORY a scene to remember it by

Water leaves the spout; 自 follows the stream back uphill to the spring it rose from.
字源記憶法自撰
框 · Frame
[thing] [verb of issuing]自 [source]
觸 · Trigger
You name what something issued from — where it came out of, was drawn from, or traces back to.
序 · The move
1Pick a verb that already means coming out or issuing: 出 / 來 / 源 / 引 / 選 / 譯 / 摘.Does the verb itself carry the leaving-the-source sense? 自 fuses to that verb, it does not supply the motion on its own.
2Glue 自 directly to the back of that verb, then name the source after it: 出自 [source].Is 自 sitting after the verb? If it sits in front of the verb and before the source, that is coverb 從, a different pattern.
3Read it back as "issued from [source]" — the thing on the left, the well on the right.Drop 自 and you lose the source-link, not the verb. The thing still came; 自 only points back to where from.

界 · Boundary
從 (coverb 'from')
自 hangs after the verb and fuses to it: 出自紅樓夢, issued-from. 從 leads, sitting before the verb and the origin: 從紅樓夢來, from … comes. Suffix bound behind vs coverb standing in front.
自從 (ever since, time)
This 自 takes a source you trace back to (出自 a book). 自從 takes a moment time runs forward from (自從那天起, ever since that day). Where-from vs since-when.
✗ 這句話自出論語 → ✓ 這句話出自論語 (自 attaches behind the verb, not in front)
✗ 這幅畫從畢卡索 (coverb 從 with no motion verb) → ✓ 這幅畫出自畢卡索 (the verb of issuing carries 自)
✗ 出自他來台灣 (this 自 wants a source, not an event) → ✓ 自從他來台灣 (since-when takes 自從)
English 'from' is one tail word covering both 'comes from X' and 'ever since X'. Chinese splits them: a source fused behind a verb (出自) versus a starting moment with 自從. And unlike English, 自 lands after its verb, never before the source as a standalone preposition.
