這下子 grammar point · tier 2 · 這下子 now (at one stroke) — this just-happened thing swings the next into reach
Takes the situation just made true and marks the consequence it now brings about in one decisive stroke — now, with that, at last.

字源 FORM what the parts do

這 points back at the thing just made true — the graph 辶 (foot on the road) over 言, an old 'to go meet' word borrowed in medieval times for 'this', so the pointing, not the road, is what carries. 下 is the indicative mark hung below a line; said in 一下 it counts one stroke, one go of an action. 子 is the weightless noun tail, said light. The three fix the situation just stated and tag the turn it makes as a single stroke.

故事 STORY a scene to remember it by

A bolt slides home; the same motion frees the gate, and it swings open.
Frame
[situation just made true],這下子[,] [the consequence it now brings about]
Trigger
Something has just become true and at one stroke makes the next thing reachable — say what it now lets you do.
The move
1State the thing that just became true as its own clause. Is there a real situation already settled for 這 to point back at, not a hypothetical?
2Place 這下子 at the head of the next clause.Does it sit between the setup and the consequence, not inside either?
3State the consequence the situation now brings about, often with 總算 / 就 / 可以 and a closing 了.Does the turn come about because of the setup, in one stroke, rather than merely happening next in time?
Examples
1找到了found (and got it)一份不錯的工作a decent job這下子now, with that — at one stroke總算finally, at last可以把貸款還完pay off the loan in full了。
He found a decent job; now, at last, he can pay off the loan.
Boundary
The kind of turn. 這下子 marks a single decisive stroke, often a relief or reversal newly within reach — now, with that. 這樣一來 projects a neutral logical consequence the setup makes possible — this being so, then. 這下子 carries the snap and the feeling; 這樣一來 reasons coolly from state to result.
於是
What it weighs. 於是 chains the next event in a narrative — and so, the next thing happened. 這下子 takes the prior situation as the cause and tags the turn it springs as one stroke. 於是 moves the story along; 這下子 swings a consequence from a settled situation.
(這下子 needs a situation already made true, not a hypothetical condition)
(with nothing stated before) → ✓ 他考上了,這下子可以放鬆了。 (這下子 needs a prior settled situation to point back at)
(the second clause must be a consequence the situation brings about, not just the next thing in time)
English 'now' / 'now that' can float anywhere and need no decisive stroke; learners drop 這下子 in front of any next sentence and lose both the settled setup it must point back at and the single-stroke turn it marks.
