· zěnme
Question word for manner or method: 怎麼 sits before the verb and asks how an action is carried out.

字源 FORM what the parts do

怎 carries the question: a heart (心) underneath does the wondering, 乍 lending only a sound worn down to zěn. 麼 is the same tail borrowed for sound in 什麼 and 這麼, worn to a light me. The pair sits in front of a verb and asks after the way the action runs.

故事 STORY a scene to remember it by

An act is about to happen, and the wondering heart steps in front of it: which way does this go?
字源記憶法
框 · Frame
[subj] 怎麼 [verb] ? (怎麼 sits before the verb, in the manner slot, never in the object slot)
觸 · Trigger
You want to be told the way or method of doing something, and the manner is the one thing you don't have.
序 · The move
1Build the plain action first, then mark the manner you are missing. Is the unknown the way it is done (not the thing, the person, or the reason)?
2Set 怎麼 directly in front of the verb, leaving the rest in statement order. Is 怎麼 before the verb, not sitting where an object noun would go?
3Read it back; a manner adverb would slide straight into 怎麼's place.Could 這樣 / 那樣 (this way / that way) replace 怎麼 and give a normal statement?

From here to the station, how do I go?

什麼
怎麼 sits before the verb and asks the way an action runs; 什麼 sits in the object slot and asks for a thing. Swap by whether the answer is a method or an object.
為什麼
怎麼 asks how it is done; 為什麼 asks why it is done. Same front-of-clause spot, but 怎麼 wants a method and 為什麼 wants a reason.
怎麼樣
怎麼 + verb asks the manner of the action; 怎麼樣 asks after a state or verdict (how is it, how about it). The 樣 turns the manner question into a question about a condition.
✗ 你走怎麼? → ✓ 你怎麼走?(怎麼 goes before the verb, not after)
✗ 你做怎麼這個? → ✓ 你怎麼做這個?(怎麼 is the manner slot before the verb, not an object word)
✗ 怎麼你不來?(meaning the reason)→ ✓ 你為什麼不來?(a reason takes 為什麼, not bare 怎麼)
English fronts "how" to the start of the question; Chinese leaves 怎麼 tucked in front of the verb, in the manner slot the answering adverb will take. Learners wrongly move it to the very front or place it after the verb like an object.
