沿著 grammar point · tier 1 · along: travel keeping to a line or edge (沿著)
· yán(zhe)
Marks the line or edge that a motion keeps to for its whole length — moving along (a river, a wall, a road), not toward an endpoint.

字源 FORM what the parts do

沿 is water (氵) beside 㕣 yǎn, borrowed for sound — a marsh-hollow worn down past reading; the water sets a course and you keep the bank at your side. 著 zhe trails behind as the weightless tail of an act still going. Together they fix the verb to a line and hold you on it the whole way.

故事 STORY a scene to remember it by

The river's edge runs ahead, and every step keeps the water at the same hand.
字源記憶法自撰
框 · Frame
沿著 [line / edge: 河邊, 牆, 路] [motion verb]
觸 · Trigger
You want to say a movement runs the length of an edge, hugging it the whole way.
序 · The move
1Name the line being followed (河邊, 牆, 海岸), not a destination. Is it an edge with length? If it is a place you are aiming AT, use 向 / 往 instead.
2Put 沿著 before that line, then the motion verb after it.Does the verb travel (走, 散步, 開) rather than point?
3Read it back as a path hugging the edge from start to finish. If only the endpoint matters and not the route, 沿著 is the wrong frame.
例 · Examples
1黃昏dusk的時候,我經常沿著along (keeping to)河邊riverside, river's edge散步stroll, take a walk
At dusk I often take a walk along the riverside.
界 · Boundary
向 / 往
沿著 hugs an edge for its whole length (the route is the point); 向/往 aim at an endpoint (the destination is the point). 沿著河邊走 walks the bank; 向河邊走 heads to the bank.
在…上
在路上 locates the motion on a surface; 沿著路 follows the road's line as a path. 沿著 needs an edge with length to track, not just a place to be.
✗ 我沿著公園散步。 → ✓ 我沿著公園的小路散步。 (沿著 needs a line/edge, not an area)
✗ 沿著火車站走。 → ✓ 向火車站走。 (a station is an endpoint; use 向/往)
✗ 我家沿著河邊。 → ✓ 我家在河邊。 (沿著 marks a route of motion, not a static location)
English "along" covers both 沿著 (follow an edge) and "along to" senses; learners swap in a destination, treating 沿著 like "to" / "toward". (著 is droppable: 沿河邊走 is also correct, just more written.)
