相反地grammar point · tier 1 · 相反地 on the contrary / conversely (instead, the opposite course)
Opens a clause that runs the opposite way to the one just stated, naming the contrary course.
字源 FORM what the parts do
反 is a hand (又) against a slope (厂), turning a thing over so this side becomes that side. 相 is an eye (目) on a tree (木); under the xiāng reading the looking goes both ways, two things facing each other. 地 is the loan adverbial marker, read light, that lets the pair stand at the head of a clause. Together: one stated course, then its facing side turned up against it.
故事 STORY a scene to remember it by
A statement lies face up on the table; the next one is laid beside it as its turned-over mirror, the side that faces the other way.
字源記憶法
框 · Frame
[clause A, often 不/沒 a denied course],相反地,[clause B, the opposite course]
觸 · Trigger
You have just denied one course, and you want to set the opposite course against it.
序 · The move
1State the first course, usually the one being denied (不/沒 + course). Is there a clear course here for the next one to reverse?
2Open the next clause with 相反地 at the head, comma after.Does 相反地 sit before its clause, not buried inside it?
3State the opposite course. Is clause B the contrary of clause A, not merely a further or different point?
例 · Examples
1我認為父母不應該shouldshould not直接directly告訴tell孩子答案the answer;相反地on the contrary; conversely,應該讓let; allow他們有機會多嘗試to try; attempt。
I think parents should not tell children the answer directly; on the contrary, they should give them chances to try more.
雖然…但是… concedes one stance and turns within it (tired, but happy anyway). 相反地 abandons the first course and names its opposite (not this, instead the reverse). One bends; the other flips.
而且 piles a second point in the SAME direction (and on top of that). 相反地 sets a point in the OPPOSITE direction. Same-way addition vs facing-way reversal.
我不告訴他答案;相反地,我也很忙。 ✗ → 我不告訴他答案;相反地,我讓他自己想。 ✓ (clause B must be the opposite course, not an unrelated point)
他很努力,相反地考得很好。 ✗ → 他很努力,所以考得很好。 ✓ (a result that agrees takes 所以; 相反地 needs a reversal)
應該讓他們嘗試相反地。 ✗ → 相反地,應該讓他們嘗試。 ✓ (相反地 heads the clause, it does not trail it)
English on the contrary / instead can float mid-sentence and often just signals a different idea; learners drop 相反地 onto any contrasting or merely additional clause, and forget the comma-headed position.
