無所謂 grammar point · tier 1 · 無所謂 — it makes no difference; either way is fine
· wúsuǒwèi
States that the alternatives that follow carry no weight — either is acceptable, the choice makes no difference, the speaker does not mind.

字源 FORM what the parts do

無 is borrowed for negation — having none. 所 opens an empty slot that turns the verb after it into a thing said or worth saying. 謂 is words (言) put to it, 胃 for sound. Together: nothing that can be said to weigh more — this way or that, none of it tips.

故事 STORY a scene to remember it by

Two options sit one on each pan of a scale, and the beam stays dead level.
字源記憶法自撰
框 · Frame
[topic] 無所謂 [option A 或 option B] / 無所謂,… (standalone reply)
觸 · Trigger
You want to flatten a yes/no, this/that, or A-or-B choice to 'either is fine, it doesn't matter to me.'
序 · The move
1Name the topic or question whose options you are flattening. Is there a real choice between two or more options behind it?
2Drop in 無所謂 to declare none of those options outweighs the other.Does the beam truly stay level — or do you actually prefer one? If you prefer one, this is the wrong pattern.
3Lay out the options after it (… 對或錯, … 去不去), or leave 無所謂 standing alone as a reply.Could a listener wrongly hear it as 'I have no opinion at all' rather than 'either is fine'? Add the options to keep it about the choice.
例 · Examples
1這個問題的答案無所謂it makes no difference (whether)對或錯right or wrong,只是每個人看法不同而已and nothing more
The answer to this question is neither right nor wrong; people simply see it differently.
界 · Boundary
不在乎
無所謂 flattens the options — neither one weighs more, either is acceptable. 不在乎 reports the speaker's feeling — I don't care about it. Same shrug, but 無所謂 is about the choice, 不在乎 about the heart.
都可以
都可以 actively accepts every option as fine (all are OK). 無所謂 denies any option the weight to matter (none tips). Often interchangeable in reply, but 無所謂 can sound dismissive where 都可以 stays agreeable.
沒關係
沒關係 waves off a problem already raised — it's fine, no harm done. 無所謂 weighs options not yet settled — either way works. 沒關係 forgives; 無所謂 declines to prefer.
我無所謂這個工作。 ✗ → 做不做這個工作對我來說無所謂。 ✓ (無所謂 weighs a choice; it does not take a bare object like a verb)
謝謝你!無所謂。 ✗ → 謝謝你!不客氣。 ✓ (無所謂 is not the reply to thanks; that is 不客氣/沒關係)
English 'whatever' covers both 'either is fine' and a dismissive 'I don't care' — 無所謂 leans choice-flattening; reaching for it to mean a flat 'I have no opinion on the topic' overshoots and can sound curt.
