順著 grammar point · tier 1 · along 順(著) (move by tracing the line of something — a path, edge, sound, current)
· shùn (zhe)
Move by tracing an existing line — a road, an edge, a sound, a current; 順 takes the line, 著 holds the motion bound to it the whole way.

字源 FORM what the parts do

順: a head (頁) turned the way the river (川) runs — face downstream, going with the current, never against it. The line you trace is that river. 著 trails after, 者 giving it the sound; the durative zhe pins the motion onto the line and keeps it bound while you move.

故事 STORY a scene to remember it by

A line drawn across the ground, and a foot that lands on it and keeps to it, every step following where the line already leads.

框 · Frame
[subj] 順著 [line: path / edge / sound / current] [motion verb + direction]
觸 · Trigger
You moved by keeping to a line already there — a road, a wall, a sound, the flow — and you want to mark that the motion tracked that line the whole way.
序 · The move
1Name the line you kept to: a path, an edge, a sound, a current — something already laid out, not a destination. Is it a continuous line you trace, not the place you are heading for?
2Put 順著 in front of that line, then the motion verb and its direction after.Does the motion come after the line, taking its course from it?
3Read it back as the line leading and the foot following it.If it reads as you setting the course and the line obeying, the order is wrong.

Follow the sound of the music over there, and you'll see a crowd of people exercising.
界 · Boundary
照著
照著 matches your action to a model — a method, a sample — copying its shape (照著做法包 — wrap by the method); 順著 keeps your motion on a continuous line — a road, a sound, a current — tracing where it leads (順著路走 — walk along the road).
向 points the action at a target and stops there (向我走來 — walked toward me, arriving at me); 順著 has no endpoint target, the motion riding a line for its whole length.
✗ 順著公園走過去 → ✓ 順著這條路走過去 — 順著 takes a line you trace (a road, an edge), not a destination you arrive at; a place-you-head-for uses 往/到.
✗ 我順著走音樂聲 → ✓ 順著音樂聲走 — the line sits complete right behind 順著, before the verb; the verb does not split it.
✗ 音樂聲順著我走 → ✓ 我順著音樂聲走 — the one moving goes in front; the line goes after 順著 and does not move.
English 'along / following X' floats loosely before or after the verb; 順著 must clamp directly onto the line, the motion verb trailing after, never before.
