界 · Boundary
Western grouping by thousandsChinese groups by 萬 — 萬 is its own unit, the rung above 千, not 'ten thousand' read as ten 千.
no placeholder (一百八)An empty middle place takes 零 (一百零八); 一百八 means a hundred-eighty, the 八 filling the tens.
✗ 一百八 (for 108) → ✓ 一百零八
✗ 十千 (for 10000) → ✓ 一萬
✗ 一千一十八 (for 1018) → ✓ 一千零一十八 (the hundreds column is empty, so 零 holds it)
English groups by thousands and has no per-place word like 萬, and no 零 spoken to hold a skipped middle place.
