話題優先 fronts a standalone frame, cut off by a pause; the comment is a complete sentence with no slot for it (筆,幾塊錢一枝呢?). 主題句 fronts an argument the comment acts on, filling a slot in it (這本書我看完了 — 看 takes 這本書). Frame-setter against argument-topic.
話題優先 raises the subject of talk and leaves the comment open. 是…的 foregrounds one detail of a settled event by clamping it between 是 and 的. Set the topic against spotlight one detail.
treating the topic as the verb's object: 幾塊錢一枝買筆呢 → 筆,幾塊錢一枝呢(topic stays out front, comment self-stands)
burying the topic mid-sentence: 你覺得筆貴不貴 → 筆,你覺得貴不貴(front it, pause, then comment)
forcing a subject-verb-object frame onto a frame-setting topic: 西瓜很多人喜歡 stated as 很多人喜歡西瓜 loses the topic reading → 西瓜,很多人喜歡(西瓜 set as frame first)
English leads with a grammatical subject and keeps every noun in its slot, so learners rebuild the bare fronted topic into a subject-verb-object clause and lose the aboutness it carried.
