界 · Boundary
V過1
慣 logs that repetition wore the act into habit (吃慣了 = used to eating it); 過 logs that the act was lived through at least once (吃過 = have eaten it before). 慣 needs many times until natural; 過 needs only one, ever.
習慣
習慣 is a standalone word (verb/noun: to be used to / a habit) that stands on its own. V慣 is the productive suffix riding a specific verb — 看慣, 住慣, 過慣 — naming which act became habit.
object before the suffix: 他過城市的生活慣了 → 他過慣了城市的生活
negating with 不 before the verb: 他不過慣城市的生活 → 他過不慣城市的生活
using 慣 for a one-time experience: 我去慣了日本 (meaning 'I've been once') → 我去過日本
English 'used to' splits two ways: 'used to do' (past habit, now stopped) and 'be used to doing' (accustomed). V慣 is only the second — a present, worn-in habit — so learners reaching from 'used to' may import a discontinued-past reading 慣 does not carry.
