跟…一樣 says identical, the gap is exactly zero; 跟…相當 says on a par, close enough to count as matched. Exact sameness against rough parity.

比 names a gap and which side wins; 跟…相當 says neither side wins, the two draw level.
差不多
差不多 is the colloquial 'about the same' for anything; 相當 weighs two things as matched in worth or measure, and reads more formal.
相當 before the dimension: 那個男生跟我相當年紀 → 那個男生跟我年紀相當 (the dimension sits before 相當)
相當 on a non-measurable pair: 這本書跟那本書相當 → 這本書跟那本書價錢相當 (name what is weighed)
treating it as a winner: 我跟他年紀相當，我大 → 我跟他年紀相當 (相當 names a draw, not a ranking)
