Marks a span: 從 fixes the starting point, 到 fixes the ending point, and the stretch between is the whole range.

從 marks the start, a path walked out of one place. 到 marks the end: 至 is an arrow landed point-down in the ground, arrival, and 刀 only carries the sound. The stretch between the two is the span.

從 alone names only where it sets out from, no endpoint. 從…到… pins both ends and gives the whole span.
到 alone names only where it arrives. 從…到… adds the start, so the stretch is bounded at both ends.
endpoint dropped: 從早上八點上班 → 從早上八點到下午五點上班
ends flipped: 從五點到八點 → 從八點到五點
wrong start marker: 由早上八點到五點 → 從早上八點到五點
English 'from … to …' maps cleanly, so learners reach for it readily; the slip is dropping 從 and leaving 到 to carry the range alone.
