字源 FORM what the parts do

總 binds loose threads (糸) into one bundle; 悤 carries its sound. 言 is the mouth speaking it out. 而 joins the two acts, 之 stands for the whole said before. Gather it all, and so speak of it.

也就是說 restates one idea in plainer words (rephrase); 總而言之 ties many points into one upshot (summary). Restating ≠ summing up.
總之
總之 is the shortened everyday twin, same job, looser register; 總而言之 keeps the full classical 而…之 and lands more formally.

✗ 這道菜總而言之很好吃。(mid-clause, no comma frame) → ✓ 這道菜又香又辣,總而言之很好吃。

English 'in summary' can open a paragraph that then introduces new material; 總而言之 only closes points already made, never opens fresh ones.
