自從…後 grammar point · tier 2 · 自從…後 — ever since (a past start point)
Marks a past starting event and the stretch of time running from it up to now.

字源 FORM what the parts do

自從 plants the origin: 從 is the road walked out of a place, so 自從 sets the one fixed moment everything runs out from. 後 closes the bracket on what trails behind that moment. The start event sits between them; the consequence follows after 後.

故事 STORY a scene to remember it by

A stake stands driven into the ground back where the road begins; an unbroken track runs forward from it to the feet standing here now.

以後
自從…後 anchors a real past start and runs its effect up to now; 以後 only sequences one thing after another and freely points at the future (放假以後 = after the holiday, still to come).
future start: 自從明天考試後 → 明天考試以後
no anchored event: 自從很久後 → 自從那次見面後
dropping the closer: 自從他走,我就一個人住 → 自從他走後,我就一個人住
English 'since' carries both the start-marker and the duration in one word, so learners leave out 後 or stretch 自從 onto a future event the way 'from now on' would.
