還 is a road and a foot (辶) going back the way one came; 睘 gives the sound, huán. Said fast and often, that return-word wore light into the everyday hái. 是 settles which one. Between the two options it asks the listener to weigh both and come back to one.

還是 makes a question — pick one of two; 或是 stays inside a statement — A or B, both fine. Swap by whether you are asking or telling.

✗ 你喝茶還是咖啡嗎? → ✓ 你喝茶還是咖啡?
✗ 你想去還是? → ✓ 你想去還是不去?
English uses one "or" in both "tea or coffee?" and "tea or coffee is fine." Chinese splits them: 還是 for the question, 或是 for the statement. Learners reach for 或是 in questions.
