Marks the one and only condition (除非 X) under which an outcome holds; 否則 carries the default that takes over whenever that condition is not met.
字源 FORM what the parts do
除非 fences off one case and leaves out the rest: 除 clears away (the swept-step sense, 除了), 非 sets the not against it, so together they name the single exception that lets the outcome stand. 否則 closes the far bracket — 否 the spoken no, 則 "then in that case" — and runs whatever follows when that one exception is absent.
故事 STORY a scene to remember it by
One gate held shut, and behind it the rain keeps falling on everyone. The single named key swings it open; without that key the rain goes on.
字源記憶法自撰
框 · Frame
除非 [sole condition],否則 [default outcome]
觸 · Trigger
You want to name the single escape from a default that otherwise keeps happening.
序 · The move
1Put the one escape condition after 除非.Is this truly the only way out, not merely one option among several? If several conditions could do it, reach for 只要 instead.
2Put the fall-through outcome after 否則.Does the 否則 clause state what happens when the 除非 condition is absent, not when it holds?
3Read it forward and back.除非 names the exit; 否則 names the default. Swapping them must break the sense — if it still reads, the two clauses are mislabelled.
例 · Examples
1除非unless (the sole condition)你對教書teaching很有興趣,否則otherwise; if not so很容易就會失去耐心lose patience。
Unless you are genuinely interested in teaching, you will easily lose patience.
界 · Boundary
只要…就…
只要 names a sufficient condition — meet it and the result follows, but other routes may exist too. 除非 names the ONLY condition: nothing else will do, and 否則 spells out the default that runs without it.
如果 floats a neutral hypothetical (if this, then that). 除非 is negatively framed and exclusive: it carves out the single exception to an outcome that otherwise keeps holding.
要不然/不然 introduce an alternative or a warning on their own (do it, or else). 除非…否則… pairs that fall-through with the one named condition that heads it off.
除非你準時,會失去機會。 ✗ → 除非你準時,否則會失去機會。 ✓ (the fall-through clause needs 否則)
除非下雨,否則我們會去。 ✗ (rain reads as the way OUT of going) → 除非天氣好,否則我們不去。 ✓ (the condition is the escape, the default is the no-go)
English "unless" stands alone, so learners drop 否則 or expect a single word. 除非 prefers the paired 否則/不然 to carry the default, and the default clause states what happens WITHOUT the condition, not with it.
