界 · Boundary
不/沒Plain 不/沒 just denies. 並 adds a presumption it is denying: it answers an assumption, not a blank question.
雖然…但是…雖然…但是… concedes a fact then turns; 並不/並沒 sits inside the turn, denying the effect the fact would seem to carry.
no presumption to deny: 天氣並好 → 天氣很好 (use 並 only against an expected claim)
wrong negator for a non-event: 他並不來 → 他並沒來 (the coming did not happen)
並 detached from the negator: 並他不知道 → 他並不知道
English carries the contrast in stress or 'actually'; learners drop 並 and the flat denial loses its push-back against the assumption.
