Sets aside the surface considerations and appeals to one underlying fact that settles the matter.
字源 FORM what the parts do
畢 drew a long-handled net coming down full, the catch all inside; from "all caught" it carries entirely, all. 竟 sets a standing figure (儿) under a tune (音), the piece played to its last note; from "played to the end" it carries in the end. Side by side they say: everything caught, everything played through — and this is what is left.
故事 STORY a scene to remember it by
The arguments are all spent, the talk played out to its last note. One plain fact still stands where they fall away.

框 · Frame
[clause appealing to a fact] 畢竟 [the underlying fact]; [the attitude it warrants]
觸 · Trigger
You want to excuse or accept something by pointing past the surface to the basic fact that makes it expected.
序 · The move
1Name the surface judgment you are softening or the puzzle you are settling. Is there a fact that, once stated, makes the rest expected?
2Place 畢竟 in front of that one underlying fact.Does the fact already hold, with no condition attached?
3Let the attitude (tolerance, acceptance, the conclusion) follow.Could you drop 畢竟 and lose only the sense of appeal-to-the-basics? If it changes the truth, it is the wrong word.
例 · Examples
1他he畢竟after all / when all is said and done是isis個(measure)孩子child,喜歡to like玩to play是正常normal的(nominalizer)。
He is a child, after all; wanting to play is only normal.
畢竟 appeals to a basic fact everyone already grants, to excuse or settle. 其實 corrects a wrong impression with a fact you did not expect. 畢竟 confirms the obvious; 其實 overturns it.
雖然…但是… concedes a fact and then turns against it. 畢竟 puts its fact forward to support the conclusion, not to be overruled by it.
✗ 他其實是個孩子,喜歡玩是正常的。(if the point is that being a child is the obvious, accepted reason) → ✓ 他畢竟是個孩子,喜歡玩是正常的。
✗ 畢竟下雨,所以我們不去了。(畢竟 does not introduce a fresh cause) → ✓ 因為下雨,所以我們不去了。
✗ 你畢竟去不去?(畢竟 is not the interrogative "after all, are you") → ✓ 你到底去不去?
English "after all" covers both 畢竟 (appeal to a basic fact) and a loose discourse filler. Reach for 畢竟 only when a genuine underlying fact is being put forward to settle the matter.
