黃
ㄏㄨㄤˊ · huáng
adj — yellow; noun — gold (in compounds)
字源 FORM — what the parts do
黃形the whole graph, taken as one
黃 carries two tellings. One reads it as a person standing with a jade pei-ornament 璜 slung at the waist — the disc worn through the middle, borrowed for the colour. The other, from 說文, splits it as 田 (field) over 炗, the old form of 光 (light): the colour of sunlit earth. Either way the word means yellow — 黃色 — and the bright metal of that colour, 黃金. As a sound it carries 橫、廣.
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
一個人站著,腰間佩一塊圓玉(璜)——玉的光,黃的。
A figure stands, a round jade (璜) at the waist — the jade's glow, and the colour is yellow.
