辶義walking, the road
Walking (辶) that comes to a halt — the original is to stop, to linger on the road. 豆 dòu carries the sound and a fitting picture: a tall stemmed dish set down and standing put. From stopping-along-the-way come 逗留 (to stay) and the playful holding-up of someone — 逗弄、逗趣 (to tease). The pause in writing is the 逗點, the comma.
