字源 FORM — what the parts do

a long-spined beast — the crouching-animal radical, added late to mark the word
a face on a standing personthe right block — a face 白(=面) above legs 儿, the original graph for "looks"; the beast 豸 was bolted on later as a tag
The right 皃 is the old word: a face 白 set above a person 儿, the look of someone. The beast 豸 on the left was added later only to mark the graph apart. Together they write 容貌 the appearance; from how a person looks came 禮貌, the manner one shows.
