烏
ㄨ · wū
noun/adj — crow; black, dark
字源 FORM — what the parts do
烏形rendered bare — a crow, drawn wholethe same bird as 鳥, with the eye-dot dropped: the crow is so black you cannot find its eye
A crow, drawn whole. The old graph carries two tellings: it is 鳥 niǎo the bird with one stroke taken away — the dot that marks the eye, because the crow is so black the eye vanishes into it; or a bird (隹) perched on a branch (枼) under a hanging 丿. From the bird: black itself — 烏黑、烏雲、烏鴉.
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
一隻全黑的鳥(鳥),黑到連眼睛那一點都不見了——烏。
A bird (鳥) all in black, so black even the dot of its eye is gone — a crow.
