Tjīng → jǐng — the reading held, the tone rose
The sun (日) over 京 jīng, a tall building catching the light. The old sense is sunlight, brightness (光也). What the light falls on is the view, the scene: 風景、景色. A thing's lit-up state becomes its situation: 景況、情景. And the light cast behind throws a shadow — 景 later split off 影 for that.
