The hand (扌) lays goods out flat; 難 nán carries the sound, hardened to tān. 說文 reads it 開也 — to open out. From spreading goods came the stall they spread on (攤子) and laying one's hand bare (攤牌). It rides the 難 series: 灘、癱.
