A mound of gathered men (𠂤, now squeezed into the left edge) under a circling banner (帀) — the old word was an army division, twenty-five hundred strong. The one who heads that body became the master, then the teacher: 老師、師傅. The left piece is worn nearly invisible; it is the crowd.
