字源 FORM — what the parts do
Tucked in the strokes is 夕, the evening moon — the time-mark. Around it the rest is 亦 (yì), worn down and split so you would not spot it whole: 說文 calls 夜 a 亦省聲 build, the moon-sign set into a clipped 亦. Where 夕 is just dusk, 夜 is the night gone full — 夜晚、半夜、過夜.
