址
ㄓˇ · zhǐ
noun — site, location, foundation (地址)
字源 FORM — what the parts do
Earth (土) and the sound 止 (zhǐ): the ground a thing is footed on. 止 began as a foot — the spot a foot stops is exactly the spot a building takes its stand, so the sound-piece does quiet double duty. From the footing come the site and the address (地址、廠址、遺址). The older spelling is 阯, with the mound 阜 instead of plain earth.
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
一隻腳(止)停在土(土)上——就在這裡落腳,這塊地就是址。
A foot (止) halts on the earth (土) — it takes its stand right here; this patch of ground is 址.
