商
ㄕㄤ · shāng
noun — trade, commerce; merchant; (math) quotient
字源 FORM — what the parts do
The top is an old graph paleographers have not pulled apart — a raised base under a blade, ground smooth by copying until the pieces stopped reading. Below it a mouth (口) talks a matter over. From talking-it-over come 商量 (to discuss), then 商人、商業 (the merchant who haggles), and in math the 商 (quotient) you work out. The same worn top heads 傷 and 觴.
故事 STORY — a scene to remember it by
兩個人對著一張口(口),把價錢來回談——談妥了,這趟買賣就是商。
Two parties and one mouth (口), the price talked back and forth — settled, the deal is 商.
