字源 FORM — what the parts do
A person (人, 亻) plants himself on a place and claims it — to occupy. 占 zhàn gives the sound, and carries its own meaning too: 占 is to claim ground by the crack of the oracle. Added 亻 sharpens it to a person taking up space: 佔有, 佔領, 佔據.
